The challenges of the green transition entails a rethinking of design methodologies through ecosystem-based approaches as theoretical and operational assumption for the transformation of the anthropic habitat. The latter is a place for all living species coexisting, to guarantee conditions of safety, health and wellbeing. These goals, expressed in the international strategies of Agenda2030, have important effects on design approaches to interventions for the renewal of urban districts, with particular reference to peripheral areas. Starting from some common environmental weaknesses in two urban areas in Naples and Milan, characterised by abandoned buildings, the investigation focuses on the environmental critical conditions of those buildings and open spaces, and on climatic vulnerabilities as well. The urban regeneration of those spaces gives a contribution to the green transition of urban districts. According to M2C4.3 and M5C2.2 Missions of the PNRR, which focus on the protection and enhancement of urban and suburban green spaces (M2C4.3) and on urban regeneration projects for reducing marginalisation and social degradation (M5C2.2), the survey prefigures proposals for the sustainable regeneration of open spaces. Based on an analytical-deductive methodology and through the tool of the video-photo reportage, the investigation develops a critical analysis of an urban area, which exemplifies the environmental relations between an abandoned building and open spaces by mapping the environmental problems and the potential for transformation in a sustainable way.
