For the Italian economy the maritime activities are fundamental and represent one of the main levers for the growth and support towards the competitiveness of its businesses. The operative freight fleet controlled by Italian shipping companies in 2012 is made up 628 units for a total tonnage capacity of 26.4 million Dwt and a total gross tonnage of about 17 million. More especially the Ro-Ro fleet under Italian control is the world’s leader, representing 13% of the total world cargo capacity.
