The play Ifriqiyyā Ummī (Mother Africa), written in 2015 by the playwright Muḥammad Abū al-Suʿūd, can be considered an example of ecocritical literature. Abū al-Suʿūd depicts a fairytale journey of a little girl, ʿĀyda, and her grandfather (the blind musician Musṭafā), accompanied by the young communist journalist, Mīnā, and their animal guide, the Cat Māgū. The protagonists of the drama, together with other symbolic and allegorical characters, travel through a place that could be Upper Egypt in search of the balad al-lā-ayna (No-Where country). The play strongly criticises human behaviour in respect to ecology and the manipulation of the African continent to extract its wealth and control it.
