This article examines the episode of the “árbol de autómatas” in manuscripts O and P of the 'Libro de Alexandre' from a perspective that brings together visual philology and reader-oriented philology. Its aim is to show how the same ekphrastic episode, transmitted in two different witnesses, gives rise to distinct modes of representation and reading. Through an analysis of the 'varia lectio', the study focuses on the relationship between word, image, and gaze, showing how the description of the tree not only shapes a marvellous space, but also guides the reader’s visual and interpretive experience. In this way, the episode emerges as a particularly fruitful case for reflecting on textual plurality, visuality, and rewriting in the medieval tradition, as well as on the agency of scribes in the shaping of the ekphrasis and, more broadly, of the work itself, becoming its (co-)authors.

Abstract
This article examines the episode of the “árbol de autómatas” in manuscripts O and P of the 'Libro de Alexandre' from a perspective that brings together visual philology and reader-oriented philology. Its aim is to show how the same ekphrastic episode, transmitted in two different witnesses, gives rise to distinct modes of representation and reading. Through an analysis of the 'varia lectio', the study focuses on the relationship between word, image, and gaze, showing how the description of the tree not only shapes a marvellous space, but also guides the reader’s visual and interpretive experience. In this way, the episode emerges as a particularly fruitful case for reflecting on textual plurality, visuality, and rewriting in the medieval tradition, as well as on the agency of scribes in the shaping of the ekphrasis and, more broadly, of the work itself, becoming its (co-)authors.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
