The process of recognition of the one who is different and the need for a confrontation with him, in the latin West matures between the second half of the ninth century and the the forties of the twelfth. Interpreters of this process are the philosophers, for their ability to recognize the relevance of a learning that dates back to the ancient and pagan world and that the “moderns” can share with them and can be understood and assimilated to their mentality as rational. In this sense philosophy is a border knowledge, devoid of identitarian aspects of cultures.
