The dissolution of Italian municipalities due to mafia infiltration represents an extraordinary measure to protect administrative legality and preserve the democratic principles of public action. In line with Goal 16 of the United Nations 2030 Agenda, this study analyzes the association between dissolutions due to mafia-related crimes and a series of financial, non-financial, and contextual indicators. The analysis, conducted on a sample of 745 Italian municipalities with over 15,000 inhabitants in the three-year period 2019–2021, uses a linear regression model to identify the determinants of the phenomenon. The results highlight a significant link between dissolution and the institution's structural deficits, as well as the influence of factors related to staff composition and socioeconomic conditions.
