This review examines Stephan Dusil’s volume on the life and work of Viktor Wolf Edler von Glanvell, an Austrian canonist active at the turn of the twentieth century. Rather than focusing solely on the history of medieval canon law, the book investigates the history of research on its sources through a biographical, bibliographical, and methodological approach, based on extensive archival material. Particular attention is devoted to von Glanvell’s editorial work, especially his editions of the Vatican manuscript Vat. lat. 1348 and Deusdedit’s Collectio canonum, as well as to his intellectual relationship with the German and Austrian historical-philological tradition. The review highlights the portrait of a meticulous and persevering scholar, firmly committed to textual analysis and the historical reconstruction of legal categories, yet less inclined to a critical problematisation of the sources.
