The essay examines the relationship between architecture, space and community life in Senegal, focusing on the cultural and spatial practices that shape places of encounter. In rural contexts, communal life traditionally develops in outdoor spaces beneath trees, around wells or within village clearings, where shade, nature and spatial centrality provide the conditions for gathering, dialogue and collective decision-making. Practices such as the bantambato embody values of ubuntu, hospitality, and reciprocity, demonstrating how social relationships are deeply connected to the spaces in which they occur. The study explores how these principles are translated from the outdoor environment into architectural space. Thresholds, roofs, walls, courtyards and shared surfaces can reproduce the protective and relational qualities traditionally provided by nature.
