Il mare a Roma

Suetonius records Nero’s intention to bring the sea in Rome from Ostia with a canal. We discuss the project, which does not appear to have been started, imagining features and purposes of it, and framing it among the activities of Nero on the infrastructures for the Annona and the military fleet. We also compare the note of Suetonius with the judgment that himself and Tacitus give on the other Neronian canal between Ostia and Averno and with the Caesar’s project, mentioned by Plutarch, of a canal between Ostia and Tarracina.

Svetonio riporta che Nerone aveva l’intenzione di far arrivare il mare a Roma con un canale da Ostia. Il progetto, che non risulta sia stato avviato, viene esaminato immaginandone le caratteristiche e le finalità e inquadrandolo negli interventi di Nerone sulle infrastrutture per i trasferimenti annonari e classiarî. Si confronta inoltre la notizia di Svetonio con il giudizio che lo stesso Svetonio e Tacito danno sull’altra fossa neroniana tra Ostia e l’Averno, e con il progetto di Cesare tra Ostia e Tarracina, ricordato da Plutarco.
