Tra religione e magia. Problemi di acculturazione nella Sicilia tardoantica

The rustici turned to entities wich could mediate between the celestial and terrestrial world in Tindari, Netum, Modica and perhaps in Syracuse, to secure their harvest and survival. They turned to these entities with magical susurri, they dedicated offers, lend a hopeful worship, fiercely hindered by Gregory the Great, forced to counter its spread because they put in danger the christian faith and the church. The plebs rusticana, burdened by debt collectors, terrified by the violence of natural phenomena, distressed by the barbarian invasions, began to deal with divine entities, through rituals, as the canterma, which certainly drew origin from tradition, always reassuring, but determined by the needs of the moment, wich reflected the mode and the aspects of a different culture, the culture of Late antiquity.

Ad entità salvifiche ed intermediarie tra mondo celeste e terrestre i rustici si rivolgevano a Tindari, a Netum, a Modica e fors’anche a Siracusa per garantirsi il raccolto e la sopravvivenza. A loro si rivolgevano con susurri magici, dedicavano offerte, prestavano un culto pieno di speranze, destinato per ciò stesso a incontrare la fiera opposizione di Gregorio Magno, necessitato a contrastarne la diffusione per l’alta pericolosità nei confronti della fede cristiana e della chiesa d’Occidente. La plebs rusticana, oppressa dagli esattori, terrorizzata dalla violenza dei fenomeni naturali, angosciata dalle invasioni barbariche, si rivolgeva ad entità divine soteriche, tramite rituali, come la canterma, che certamente traevano la loro origine dalla tradizione, sempre rassicurante, ma che erano determinati dai bisogni del momento e riflettevano modalità e aspetti propri di una cultura diversa, tardoantica.
