The Sicilian Channel area is characterized by a high degree of natural and anthropogenic risk compared to the entire area of the Mediterranean basin. The risk is defined as the expected value of losses due to the occurrence of an event in a particular area. Among the various types of risk, the seismic one has a significant effect. In fact, in Italy, 30.000 earthquakes have occurred in the last millennium and 120.000 people have died in the last century. As part of the seismic risk, the seismic vulnerability plays an important role. In fact, 40%of the Italian population lives in seismic areas. Moreover, in these areas the 64% of the buildings has been built without antiseismic codes. In the SIMIT project, within this issue, the Lead Partner’s request consists in a pre-earthquake expeditious method for the analysis and assessment of the seismic vulnerability of the urban centres. This has the aim to elaborate guidelines and actions of mitigation and prevention of the analyzed territory with respect of the seismic events. Based on this, the engineering groups, of the Universities of Catania, Malta and Palermo, have dealt with the analysis and evaluation of the seismic vulnerability according to different methodological approaches. This volume represents the obtained results about this issue through implementations to the test sites concerned by the project: Lampedusa, Ortigia (Siracusa), Xemxija and Msida (Malta) and Nadur (Gozo). The present volume consists of three parts. In part I the Engineering Group of the University of Catania has conducted a study for the definition of a new expeditious pre– earthquake method for the analysis and evaluation of the seismic vulnerability of urban centres. In part II the Engineering Group of the University of Palermo has conducted a study on the analysis and evaluation of the seismic vulnerability of the city centre of the island of Lampedusa. In Part III, the Engineering Group of the University of Malta has focused on the development of a seismic vulnerability assessment method for use on the contemporary load bearing masonry building typology present in the Maltese Islands.
