Abstract

The central geographical position of Sicily, in the Euro-Mediterranean context, could become economically central to the implementation of a dourable tourisme, environmentally sound and capable of triggering a virtuous circle bringer of recovery and sustainable development, not only of the island territory, but also all the countries bordering on the "Mare Nostrum". But for the implementation of a real enhancement of the numerous cultural property in the island and throughout the Euro-Mediterranean area, incisive works should be initiated for recovery of cultural property and correct planning, respectful of the cultural identity of many existing there. Sicily, characterized by multiple landscapes, the result of numerous cultural conditioning that have evolved over the centuries, represents a successful laboratory for sustainable tourism development, respectful of people and able to make wealth without plundering the environment of its unique natural, historical and artistic attractions. This article, after pointing out the importance of cultural tourism for the economic growth of the island in its wider Euro-Mediterranean context and for the implementation of a real dialogue between Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, the focus' attention to the serious and persistent lack of infrastructure, not only strictly Sicilian, because on the whole euro-Mediterranean area, and marketing are not innovative, trying to identify, based on analysis of experiences of the territories, which are or may be the most appropriate and successful tools in cultural heritage and the most picturesque tourist routes, tracing the past, are intended to recover the old image of Sicily, "gateway" of cultures, and a "Mare Nostrum", the heart and center of gravity of 'global economy, bringing together rather than divide the peoples on both sides.
