Starting from the use of neue (or ne uel) in the transmitted text of Vegetius, Dere militari 4,41,4 (on weather signs, strongly depending from Virgil, Georgics1,438-449), an investigation is carried out about the occurrences of theconjunction nē introducing indirect interrogative clauses (and also conditionalclauses in late Latin). Returning to Vegetius’ text, this inquiry shows that alsohere the conjunction nē has an interrogative value and that we have to discardthe conjecture niue which we find in Reeve’s edition. A discussion on thepossibility that Vegetius used other sources (such as a Latin translation of Aratus)in this passage in addition to Virgil closes the study.

Abstract
Starting from the use of neue (or ne uel) in the transmitted text of Vegetius, Dere militari 4,41,4 (on weather signs, strongly depending from Virgil, Georgics1,438-449), an investigation is carried out about the occurrences of theconjunction nē introducing indirect interrogative clauses (and also conditionalclauses in late Latin). Returning to Vegetius’ text, this inquiry shows that alsohere the conjunction nē has an interrogative value and that we have to discardthe conjecture niue which we find in Reeve’s edition. A discussion on thepossibility that Vegetius used other sources (such as a Latin translation of Aratus)in this passage in addition to Virgil closes the study.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
