Gli stranieri nell'Alto Medioevo

In early medieval society foreigners are an ambiguous and complex presence; the ancient Germanic consuetudines and the barbaric laws protected them, exalting the host’s duty, while the Church used its own property (guest rooms, xenodochia…) to their advantage. Nevertheless, the same sources certify the existence of an adverse attitude that dangerously placed foreigners among the numerous ranks of outcasts.

Gli stranieri costituiscono nella società altomedievale una presenza ambigua e complessa: le antiche consuetudines germaniche e la legislazione barbarica li proteggevano, esaltando il principio dell’ospitalità, mentre la Chiesa utilizzò a loro vantaggio le proprie strutture (foresterie, xenodochia…). Le stesse fonti attestano, tuttavia, l’esistenza di una mentalità ostile che collocava pericolosamente gli stranieri nella folta schiera degli emarginati.
