«Il tempo della solitudine». Istituzioni per la tutela dei monumenti in Sicilia prima e dopo la guerra

The Allied landings in Sicily ended soon after the capitulation of Messina on the 17th of August 1943. The withdrawal of the Italian and German troops beyond the strait definitively cut the link with the rest of the nation and Sicily became an island in a sea of war. The essay examines the work of the protection institutions in Sicily during the cooperation with the allies and soon after the return of the Italian authorities, focusing on to what extent it was possible to preserve the institutional culture of the restoration in a situation of emergency and isolation. The analysis of the context and of the network of relationships for the action of the Superintendents in the aftermath of the conflict shows how their mission was “ethical” more than “scientific”. It also helps to understand the reasons and contradictions that marked the long season of monumental and building reconstruction.

Il 17 agosto 1943, data della definitiva capitolazione di Messina, si concludono le operazioni dello sbarco alleato in Sicilia. Le truppe italiane e tedesche vengono respinte oltre lo stretto e il legame con il resto della nazione viene definitivamente reciso: la Sicilia è un’isola in un mare di guerra. Il saggio esamina l’opera delle istituzioni per la tutela nella Sicilia liberata, nella fase di collaborazione con gli alleati ed in quella immediatamente successiva di rientro delle autorità italiane, tentando di comprendere la “tenuta” della cultura istituzionale del restauro in condizioni di emergenza e di isolamento. L’analisi degli scenari e della rete dei rapporti entro cui si colloca l’azione delle Soprintendenze all’indomani del conflitto chiarisce il senso della missione “etica” prima ancora che “scientifica” affidata agli uffici; nel contempo emergono in modo incisivo le ragioni e le contraddizioni che contrassegneranno la lunga stagione della ricostruzione monumentale ed edilizia.
