Carumonam is a new broad spectrum B-lactam. The aim of our study was to investigate its microbiological prifile, and to compare it to aminoglycosides, cephalosporins, aztreonam and piperacilin. The following parameters were used: minimum inhibitoty concetrations and minimum bactericidal concetrations, and the interference with the MICs of the inoculum, medium, serum, and sputum. The post-antibiotic effect (PAE), the interfernce on bacterial coaggregation and on the glycocalyx were also considered. More than 80% of the tested strains were sensitive to carumonam ( the percentage and MICs being better than other antibiotics). Its action is not affected by any of the elements taken into consideration except for the size of the inoculum ( lower MICs at 1.5x103 inoculum). The PAE ( between 105 and 126 minutes), the inhibition of coaggregation (at 1/4 and 1/8 MICs) and the inhibition of the glycocalyx production and function were high.
Carumonam è un recente B-lattamico ad ampio spettro d'azione. Scopo del nostro studio è stata la valutazione del suo profilo microbiologico, in confronto a quella di aminoglucosidi, cefalosporine, aztreonam e piperacillina mediante i seguenti parametri: minime concetrazioni inibenti e battericide, interferenza sulla CMI dell' inoculo, terreni di coltura, siero e sputo. Sono stati presi in consideranzione anche l'effetto post-antibiotico (PAE), l'interferenza sulla coaggregazione batterica e sul glicocalice. Oltre l'80% dei ceppi saggiati si sono mostrati sensibili a caruminam ( percentuale e CMI migliore che per gli antibiotici). Tale attività non è influenzata da alcun elemento esaminato tranne che dalla dimensione dell'inoculo( CMI più basse ad inoculo 1,5x103). Buoni il PAE ( compreso tra 105 e 126 minuti), l'inibizione della coaggregazione ( sia ad 1/4 sia ad 1/8 CMI)e del glicocalice.
