Optical constants in the range 1-6 eV of ion-irradiated hydrogenated amorphous carbon have been obtained in order to gain information on the atomic and electronic structure of this material. The film composition was checked by the elastic recoil detection technique and Rutherford backscattering. Ion irradiation leads to a decrease of hydrogen concentration (up to 10%) and an increase of trigonal carbon fraction (up to 60%). A comparison with several atomic models is reported.

Abstract

Optical constants in the range 1-6 eV of ion-irradiated hydrogenated amorphous carbon have been obtained in order to gain information on the atomic and electronic structure of this material. The film composition was checked by the elastic recoil detection technique and Rutherford backscattering. Ion irradiation leads to a decrease of hydrogen concentration (up to 10%) and an increase of trigonal carbon fraction (up to 60%). A comparison with several atomic models is reported.
