The synthesis is reported of some 3-deoxyflavylium chlorides by photocyclization of 2-hydroxychalcone precursors; the corresponding flavylium-chromenol hydration constants were determined and the pK-structure relationships are discussed in terms of the electronic and steric effects of the substituents.

Abstract
