The issue of leisure consumption has received growing attention, espe- cially for its relevance in the measurement of well-being and in the comparison of welfare systems. This study aims at contributing to these lines of research by providing an empirical investigation on the determinants of leisure related expenditure for 21 O ECD countries in the period 1990-2005. The analysis sheds some light on the impact of economics, socio-demographic and political variables on expenditure. Our results bear useful implications to the design of policies on well-being, redistribution and female workers’ consumption behaviour

Abstract

The issue of leisure consumption has received growing attention, espe- cially for its relevance in the measurement of well-being and in the comparison of welfare systems. This study aims at contributing to these lines of research by providing an empirical investigation on the determinants of leisure related expenditure for 21 O ECD countries in the period 1990-2005. The analysis sheds some light on the impact of economics, socio-demographic and political variables on expenditure. Our results bear useful implications to the design of policies on well-being, redistribution and female workers’ consumption behaviour
