The Authors discuss 34 cases of coital lesions in patients studied from 1970 to 1983 at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Vittorio Emanuele Hospital - Catania University. The incidence was 0.32% of the total admissions (10,377). 41.19% (14 cases) of the patients were married and 70.58% (24 cases) housewives. There were coital lesions in first coitus in 17 patients (50%) of total examined whose median age was 20.9 years; in the other patients the average age was 29.5 years. There was laceration of the vagina in 41.17% (14 cases); in two cases laceration of the labia and in the other two hematoma of the labia majora. Upon hospital admission two patients were anemic and one in shock, but there were no deaths. Therapy consisted of suture of laceration. The average period of hospitalization was 1 day and 9 hours.
