Knowledge society is the new perspective toward which seems to be addressed the economic and cultural development of our time. The knowledge-based society is constantly evoked as the new horizon of investments, commitments and research, and has been recently at the heart of European politics, which -though largely unsuccessful- has tried to this end to mobilise, starting from the Lisbon strategy, the resources of the member Nations. What do we exactly mean by that term, what are its dimensions, its origins and prospects? According to our opinion Europe can't be only mean a wider market where knowledge and culture are only intended for economic development. So doing the EU is running the risk of con- ceiving culture on the basis only of economic productivity.
