The merovingian society is characterised by an exceptional high rate of infant mortality that is attested in the works of Gregory of Tours. The number of natural deaths were increased by life-threatening illnesses and by the phenomenon of infanticide. The same sources, however, also report mothers and fathers who lovingly look after their little ones and turn to the intercession of saints to supplicate their recovery. There were also parents concerned about their children’s education.

Abstract
The merovingian society is characterised by an exceptional high rate of infant mortality that is attested in the works of Gregory of Tours. The number of natural deaths were increased by life-threatening illnesses and by the phenomenon of infanticide. The same sources, however, also report mothers and fathers who lovingly look after their little ones and turn to the intercession of saints to supplicate their recovery. There were also parents concerned about their children’s education.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
