The issue of micro and small agricultural farms has been widely debated in the international literature but scarce are the studies concerning the economics of micro and small olive oil growing farms within the marginal areas. Using survey data collected in representative olive growing area, this paper evaluates and discusses the economic results of a stratified sample of olive oil farms and ascertain the implication for the economic and social sustainability of rural communities in marginal agricultural areas. Findings show the considerable heterogeneity of the Sicilian olive growing in these areas, due to the different cultivars, and method of production and agricultural management techniques. In addition, results show the poor remuneration of productive factors within olive growing activities in terms of costs and as a consequence in terms of profitability. Persisting the average negative profitability of crops, the majority of olive farms would be forced out of the market, as a consequence our results should suggest the reinforcement of endogenous resources in combination with public initiatives. © 2015, SRAC - Societatea Romana Pentru Asigurarea Calitatii. Abstract
