This article presents the results of an empirical research on the Lampedusa tragedy of 3 October 2013 by comparing two opposing but related cultural processes. The first (dematerializing) process involves actors and social institutions seeking to dissimulate and diminish all the material aspects related to death. On the contrary, the second (materializing) one is based on the acknowledgement of death as a corporeal realm. Both processes mobilize physical and cognitive resources in the symbolic as well as real domains.

Abstract

This article presents the results of an empirical research on the Lampedusa tragedy of 3 October 2013 by comparing two opposing but related cultural processes. The first (dematerializing) process involves actors and social institutions seeking to dissimulate and diminish all the material aspects related to death. On the contrary, the second (materializing) one is based on the acknowledgement of death as a corporeal realm. Both processes mobilize physical and cognitive resources in the symbolic as well as real domains.
