In locality Il Calvario, sited east of Biancavilla (CT), the geosite “fluoro-edenite and fluorophlogopite lava breccias of M. Calvario” was established, whose worldwide interest was attributed to the presence of fluoro-edenite. It represents the first calcic amphibole characterized by the substitution of OH groups with F. This mineral was found in the autoclastic benmoreitic lavas, dated back to 15 ky, which interacted with F-rich hot fluids from which several minerals formed (fluoro-edenite, fluorophlogopite, zircon, Fe-rich enstatite, hematite (specularite), pseudobrookite and trydimite). The abundance of F and other trace elements (Ba, Rb, Th, Zr, P) was ascribed to the volatile flushing in the plumbing system. The scientific interest in fluoro-edenite also derives from its remarkable environmental impact, testified by several cases of pleural mesothelioma among the citizens of Biancavilla, caused by the exploitation of the quarry now disused and subject to reclamation. Indeed, numerous researches confirmed the high toxicity of fluoro-edenite, primarily in its Fe(II)-rich fibrous habit which is accountable for catalysis in the formation of free radicals, triggering first an inflammatory process in lungs and then the proliferation of tumoral cells (pleural mesothelioma). Although several studies were carried out on fluoro-edenite, and its environmental impact, new researches would be necessary for improving the knowledge of the origin of this mineral, and for finding other occurrences of it for the environmental protection.

Abstract
Although several studies were carried out on fluoro-edenite, and its environmental impact, new researches would be necessary for improving the knowledge of the origin of this mineral, and for finding other occurrences of it for the environmental protection.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
