this contribution analyses the story of the prophetess Sagah as it has been passed down by Abu’l-Farag al-Isfahani (d. 967) in the Kitab al-aghani. Adopting a gender-based approach, it outlines the discursive strategies through which the figure of the prophetess, a contemporary of Muhammad, has undergone a process of denigration and devaluation in the literary imaginary. The analysis also shows how it is through the body, or through female difference that is stigmatised and conceived of in negative terms, that the prophetess is mortified and deprived both of the authoritative word and the power to command (both ceded to the corresponding male figure).

Abstract
this contribution analyses the story of the prophetess Sagah as it has been passed down by Abu’l-Farag al-Isfahani (d. 967) in the Kitab al-aghani. Adopting a gender-based approach, it outlines the discursive strategies through which the figure of the prophetess, a contemporary of Muhammad, has undergone a process of denigration and devaluation in the literary imaginary. The analysis also shows how it is through the body, or through female difference that is stigmatised and conceived of in negative terms, that the prophetess is mortified and deprived both of the authoritative word and the power to command (both ceded to the corresponding male figure).File | Dimensione | Formato | |
