In Italy during the fascist period several school buildings were built in accordance with design criteria established by national regulations. These historic buildings, built with traditional building techniques and consolidated design criteria, today need a higher energy requirement than current standards. Although the italian energy efficiency legislation for cultural heritage allows the derogation, the scientific community for over a decade, is addressing this issue with the aim of finding appropriate andalternative solutions to the current practices for energy performance improvement of historic building considered in their specific geographical context (GeoCluster).The paper shows the first results of a research aimed to refurbishment of historic schoolbuildings. Through a case study, representative of school heritage built in Catania in the thirties of the twentieth century, the main strategies for energy improvement of this buildings are discussed taking into account, with a systemic approach, bothcultural value of these buildings and environmental sustainability of materials and processes.
