«Shadow of the Flesh or its Venom»The body-mind problem in Peter Schlemihl’s wonderful Story by Adelbert von Chamisso.Renata Gambino e Grazia Pulvirenti(Università degli Studi di Catania)This work aims to propose a new analysis of a very recurrent literary motif: that of selling the shadow, which became very famous thanks to a masterpiece of the German Romantics, the novel of Adelbert von Chamisso Peter Schlemihl’s wonderful story. The attempt here is to interpret the paradoxical splitting of the body from the shadow within the frame of the traditional philosophical “mind-body problem”, crossing this perspective with recent neuro-cognitive studies about it. Therefore the literary image of the shadow is interpreted as figurative representation of a part, or level, of the main character’s consciousness. The research about the definition of human consciousness and about the boundaries set between the mind and the body, were for German Romantic authors a core question, not only in religious and philosophical terms but also for the scientific empirical research. How this topic was permeating the time is made evident by observing the innovative scientific studies of that time about optics, physiology, physiognomic but also the very popular fashion of cutting silhouettes and of painting the casted shadows in order to look for the essence of the object. The shadow in the novel will be interpreted as a “layer” of the complex human conscious life, as signature of the never ending human need of experiencing truth and of structuring the fundamental relation between subject and environment.
