In this paper, the results of the analyses performed on transport amphorae found in Messina are reported. In particular, the so-called “Corinthian B”, “ionio-massaliote” and “pseudo-chiote” amphorae have been studied. From a microscopic point of view, their fabric is not homogeneous, and a relevant part of the analysed samples is not distinguishable from locally produced ceramic from the Messina area. For almost all the samples, it has been possible to formulate a hypothesis about the production sites based on purely archaeological elements.

Abstract

In this paper, the results of the analyses performed on transport amphorae found in Messina are reported. In particular, the so-called “Corinthian B”, “ionio-massaliote” and “pseudo-chiote” amphorae have been studied. From a microscopic point of view, their fabric is not homogeneous, and a relevant part of the analysed samples is not distinguishable from locally produced ceramic from the Messina area. For almost all the samples, it has been possible to formulate a hypothesis about the production sites based on purely archaeological elements.
