Abstract
In the years of the eighteenth century revolutions for civil and cultural rights, the Catholic Spain hesitates between renewal and retreat. Only a small circle of men open to the spirit of the new century, the Spanish Ilustrados, and among them the artist Francisco Goya y Lucientes. He is the painter of the satires against the Inquisition, the portraitist of the “afrancesados” and of the revolutionary ambassadors. Goya’s art works, based on an extraordinary social analysis, interpret the cultural battle of the Enlightenment against ignorance, against the power of the civil and religious authority and focus on the educational function of art, marking it with a definite critical pedagogical orientation.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
