Recent Studies in Hatran Aramaic Texts

Since the publication in 1998 of Klaus Beyer’s ‘Die aramäischen Inschriften aus Assur, Hatra und dem übrigen Ostmesopotamien’ (Göttingen), a series of previously unpublished texts from Hatra have been transcribed, translated, annotated and studied. These publications did not tackle the problem of multiple numeration of Hatran inscriptions, a problem which involves both the identification and the translation and correct comprehension of the texts. The article aims at putting in order the often rather unmethodical numeration and identification of Hatran inscriptions, as well as putting forth a general rule to be used in the coming studies in the same field. After a brief survey of the text editions of the 79 newly edited inscriptions (between 1998 and 2010), the article sets forth some new readings and interpretations of some passages of the most important inscriptions. The work has greatly benefited from the use of unpublished material supplied by Prof. Roberta Ricciardi Venco (Director, Missione Archeologica Italiana a Hatra, Turin).

All’indomani della pubblicazione dello studio di K. Beyer sui testi aramaici di Hatra e della Mesopotamia settentrionale (1998), una serie di testi hatreni inediti è stata studiata da diversi aramaisti europei ed iraqeni. L’assenza di sistematicità in alcune di queste ultime pubblicazioni ha creato problemi che interessano tanto l’identificazione quanto la traduzione e corretta comprensione dei testi. L’articolo si prefigge lo scopo di mettere ordine nella non sempre univoca numerazione ed identificazione dei testi, nonché di proporre un criterio di massima da utilizzare in futuro per analoghi studi. Dopo aver passato brevemente in rassegna le edizioni delle 79 nuove iscrizioni editate dal 1998 al 2010, l’articolo propone alcune nuove letture ed interpretazioni per i testi delle iscrizioni più importanti.
