Vegetation analysis and study of the ornamental flora of the Akrai (Palazzolo Acreide, Syracuse) archaeological area, aimed to the conservation and the valorisation of architectonical structures. In this paper a study of the ruderal vegetation and of the ornamental flora occurring in the archaeological area of Akrai (Palazzolo Acreide, Syracuse) is presented. Phytosociologic analysis leaded to identification of several vegetational types, belonging to Parietarietea judaicae, Adiantetea capilli-veneris, Stellarietea mediae (Brometalia rubenti-tectori, Geranio-Cardaminetalia hirsutae), Polygono-Poetea annuae, Helianthemetea gauttatae, Lygeo-Stipetea (Bromo-Oryzopsion miliaceae), Rhamno-Prunetea classes. On the basis of this analysis and considering the biological spectrum of each vegetation type, together with the presence of species with high dangerousness, the impact of the vegetation on the archaeological monuments was evaluated. The question of the control on the vegetation growing in the archaeological area of Akrai is in contrast with the necessity of maintaining many species of phytogeographic or aesthetic value, as Antirrhinum siculum Miller, Capparis spinosa L. and Calendula fulgida Rafin.
