The Authors reviews the current state of our knowledge concerning the pigment cells of Amphibia and Reptilia livers. They state the following:that these cells are really resident macrophages of the liver (Kupffer cells); are able to synthesize melanosomes andmelanins; conclude their vital cycle by apoptosis and, due to their melanic content, they are able to scavenge the superoxide anion and to protect tissues against lipoperoxidation.
