We were very interested to read the paper by Karawajczyk et al on counting white blood cells using a portable, point-of-care device, the HemoCue WBC DIFF (HemoCue AB, Ängelholm, Sweden) (1). The authors concluded that this device was useful and reliable for assessing leucocyte and neutrophil counts, but not eosinophils and monocytes. The study was conducted in a population of children admitted to a paediatric emergency department and a paediatric oncology unit, without any further selection and therefore with a very low probability of eosinophilic diseases. Abstract
