The first part of this essay describes and compares the two main ancient positions on the origin of the world: ‘creationism’, whose main representative in the classical age was Plato, and ‘eternalism’, supported mainly by Aristotle in the same age. The second part of the research focuses on the outcomes of the conflict between the two aforementioned points of view, since neither the Platonic nor Aristotelian position was accepted by their respective followers in a linear and straightforward way. In late antiquity, the principal contributions to the debate on the question of the origin of the world, in general, and on the contrast between the Platonic and Aristotelian positions, in particular, have come mainly from Plotinus, Proclus, Ammonius of Hermias and John Philoponus; among these, all except the Christian Philoponus, will confirm (except for some important exegetical differences), against Aristotle, the metaphorical and not literal reading of Plato’s Timaeus myth, which had already been proposed by the academic philosophers Speusippus and Xenocrates. An examination of several texts by these philosophers will provide us with a complex and varied framework on the question, and finally, the discussion on the problem of the origin of the universe will shed light on another very discussed issue between neoplatonic exegetes, that is strictly connected to the question of the origin of the world: that of the causality of the first principle.
