Un aspetto del soprannaturale nella cultura aramaica

Among the myriads of ancient objects dug out of the steppes and dead cities of the Near East, are found Mesopotamian incantation bowls. They are simple clay bowls, inscribed on the internal - and sometimes on the external - surface with ink, and in some cases decorated with drawings of demons and supernatural beings. These artifacts attracted the attention of scholars in Semitic languages because the texts they bear are mainly written in three different varieties of Late Aramaic: Jewish Babylonian Aramaic, Syriac and Mandaic.

Tra la miriade di oggetti misteriosi che le steppe e le città morte del Vicino Oriente ci hanno restituito un posto particolare occupano le coppe magiche mesopotamiche. Si tratta di ciotole di semplice argilla, raramente rifinite, iscritte all’interno e a volte anche sulla superficie esterna con inchiostro e decorate occasionalmente da figure di demoni ed esseri soprannaturali. Questi manufatti hanno suscitato l’attenzione degli studiosi di lingue semitiche, dal momento che i testi presenti su di essi sono principalmente redatti in tre diverse varietà di aramaico: aramaico giudaico babilonese, siriaco e mandaico.
