This paper investigates the feasibility of a unitary national history of preservation, one aimed at keeping together the notions of landscape, territory and environment, traditionally considered as objects of separated "disciplinary histories". In this light, the first part of the essay examines the most crucial moments of the early Twentieth century legislation, retracing the different studies and approaches adopted in the analysis of the Italian trajectory. The main obstacle to the efficacy of preservation policies seems to lie in the lacking connection between the disciplinary urban planning and the practice of landscape and cultural heritage preservation. The second part of the essay is focused on the Republican Age and indicates the emerging modern ecologically-oriented notion of "environment" as well as in the birth of the regional institutes as the two main factors of innovation and the two study objects a unitary history of preservation is asked to confront with
