Abstract

On the basis of what has been identified by international organizations such as the UN, the problem of supply and distribution of water resources will be one of the central themes in international relations over coming decades: the control and distribution of “blue gold” will become the most significant cause of conflicts in the near future. Consequently, detailed knowledge of man’s relationship with water-as-an-element in previous centuries is of fundamental importance for orientating the world community towards an aware and sustainable development of this resource. Medieval man looked upon water as an element fundamental to creation and associated it not only with satisfying needs related to daily life (e.g. distribution and irrigation of fields, extinguishing fires), but also with a series of symbolic meanings (e.g. as an element of purification in the rite of christening or as a sign of divine wrath in the case of floods) or therapeutic properties (consider the rediscovery, in the late Medieval period, of thermal baths). But just how did this relationship manifest itself in two areas? The area corresponding to the Ost Sicily and Catania in the thirteenth–sixteenth centuries.. The aim of this work is to provide, in the form of a monograph on the topic, an organic reconstruction of the relationship man–water in the two areas cited above. This will be a point of departure for a comparison – on the international level – of the relationship between man and water-as-an-element in the various phases of historical development.
