According to their origin and histological features, primary penile malignant tumors can be classified as malignancies of epidermal origin, tumors arising from urethral tissues, and soft tissue neoplasms. Besides epidermal-derived tumors, penile malignant neoplasms with the greater interest for the dermatologist are represented by soft tissue tumors and melanomas. According to the histotype, these tumors exhibit different clinical and prognostic features. Prompt biopsy is always recommended to establish the correct diagnosis and to choose the best therapeutic option. The therapeutic approach is often difficult. Because of the rarity of these tumors, there are no large series of patients with long term follow-up, so that a uniform staging system and guidelines for diagnosis and treatment are not standardized yet.
