On the basis of a detailed study of the seismic history of Calabria and Sicily, in the last three centuries, supplemented by general information on the major shocks of the last 1,000 years, it may be concluded that Southern Calabria (Straits of Messina included) is the most active seismic zone in the two Regions, if not of the whole Italian territory. More than 50% of the territory of Calabria and Sicily has experienced, at least once in 300 years, one IX-MSK or higher shock.

Abstract

On the basis of a detailed study of the seismic history of Calabria and Sicily, in the last three centuries, supplemented by general information on the major shocks of the last 1,000 years, it may be concluded that Southern Calabria (Straits of Messina included) is the most active seismic zone in the two Regions, if not of the whole Italian territory. More than 50% of the territory of Calabria and Sicily has experienced, at least once in 300 years, one IX-MSK or higher shock.
