The paper reports on the anchoring of Mn-based single molecular magnets (Mn12 SMM) on silicon by using undecanoic acid grafted on H-terminated Si(100) surfaces. The grafting route consists of three steps: 1) grafting of the methyl ester of 10-undecenoic acid on the silicon surface, 2)hydrolysis of the ester group, and 3) ligand exchange between Mn12 cluster and the grafted undecanoic acid to anchor the Mn12 to the organic layer.

Abstract

The paper reports on the anchoring of Mn-based single molecular magnets (Mn12 SMM) on silicon by using undecanoic acid grafted on H-terminated Si(100) surfaces. The grafting route consists of three steps: 1) grafting of the methyl ester of 10-undecenoic acid on the silicon surface, 2)hydrolysis of the ester group, and 3) ligand exchange between Mn12 cluster and the grafted undecanoic acid to anchor the Mn12 to the organic layer.
