Forty patients undergoing surgeryfor infections of the oral cavitywere randomly allocated to oral treatment with ofloxacin (Oflocin) 300mg (20 patients) or spiramycin 3,000,00 iu (20 patients) twice daily for a period starting just before surgery and lasting unitil three days after surgery. Bacteriological cultures were drawn before and after treatment. Antibiotic susceptibilities were determined by the Kirby-Bauer agar diffusion disc method, 95% of ofloxacin-treated patients proving sensitive to treatment as against 75% of patients in the spiramycin group. Clinical results, based on incidence of post-surgical infection, showed 95% success for ofloxacin and 80% spiramycin. The results indicated that both drugs are effective in the prophylaxis of oral post-surgical infections, microbiological and clinical findings being significantly better for ofloxacin.
