The article provides an interesting parallelism among two literary works, "La Mandragola" of Machiavelli and "La caccia al lupo" of Verga. Both the authors, despite belonging to different ages, peer into the bottom of the human soul, where they find an inevitable feral essence. Every man is an animal, which hypocritically hides its true nature made of egoism and wickedness. But if in Verga the pessimism is total and there is no room for any illusory humanistic solidarity, in Machiavelli such ferocity can be used as an advantage by man, so as to change reality according to his own interest.

Abstract

The article provides an interesting parallelism among two literary works, "La Mandragola" of Machiavelli and "La caccia al lupo" of Verga. Both the authors, despite belonging to different ages, peer into the bottom of the human soul, where they find an inevitable feral essence. Every man is an animal, which hypocritically hides its true nature made of egoism and wickedness. But if in Verga the pessimism is total and there is no room for any illusory humanistic solidarity, in Machiavelli such ferocity can be used as an advantage by man, so as to change reality according to his own interest.
