An open study on 40 patients (16 F/24 M, age 16-75 years), affected by vulgar psoriasis, palmo-plantar psoriasis, psoriasis of the scalp and/or sebopsoriasis, observed at the Dermatology Clinic of the University of Catania, has been performed. The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of a cream and a balm containing urea (30% and 45%), lactic acid and ammonium lactate on the keratotic component of the psoriasis. Treatment schedule was respectively in case of moderate and severe keratosis 30% and 45% urea cream, twice daily, in palmo-plantar psoriasis 45% urea cream once daily under an occlusive dressing in hairy areas balm once daily at bedtime. After two weeks of treatment there was in all cases a reduction of the keratotic component, which completely disappeared after an average of 4-8 weeks depending on severity of keratosys. In some cases there was also a reduction of the erythema. No side effect was observed and all formulations were well-accepted by the patients. In conclusions, althought these results need confirmation on an higher number of patients, our experience demonstrates that the tested formulations may represent a valid support during specific therapies for psoriasis, representing an effective, safe, and well-accepted option for reducing and/or eliminate the keratotic component.
