Eco a colori e in bianco e nero

The article analyzes the visual dimension within the narrative universe of Umberto Eco, also in the light of non-fiction oeuvre. The objects of the investigation are the function of ‘seminal images’ in the elaboration of novels, the reflection on the rhetorical mechanisms of hypotyposis and ekphrasis, the relationship between image and memory and in particular the role of iconographic inserts in two illustrated novels, The mysterious flame of Queen Loana and The Prague Cemetery. In this way it’s pointed out the persistent presence of the Apocalypse theme, where the dynamic of vision and the mechanisms of revelation in post-modern age converge.

L’articolo analizza la dimensione visuale all’interno dell’opera narrativa di Umberto Eco, anche alla luce della produzione saggistica. Vengono indagate la funzione delle ‘immagini seminali’ nell’elaborazione dei romanzi, la riflessione sui meccanismi retorici dell’ipotiposi e dell’ekphrasis, il rapporto tra immagine e memoria e in particolare il ruolo dell’apparato iconico nei due romanzi illustrati, La misteriosa fiamma della regina Loana e Il cimitero di Praga. Emerge così la persistente presenza del tema dell’Apocalisse, dove convergono la dinamica della visione e i meccanismi della rivelazione nel postmoderno.
