R-(-)-Mellein was isolated from the organic extract of culture fluids of Phoma tracheiphila, the fungus causing the citrus disease known as mal secco. Mellein at a concentration of 100 mug ml-1 induces symptoms of phytotoxicity in tomato cuttings, and at 200 mug ml-1 causes 100% mortality of Artemia salina larvae.
