Il contributo di Gustavo Giovannoni al dibattito sulle costruzioni antisismiche nella prima metà del Novecento

The study aims to investigate the contribution of Gustavo Giovannoni to the debate on earthquake-resistant buildings in Italy in the first half of the twentieth century. After the 1908 earthquake in Messina and Reggio Calabria a lively international debate about earthquake- resistant buildings was developed. The studies and the patents on this issue produced by a large group of engineers and architects focused primarily on the more technical aspects, mainly based on testing of new construction systems or, less frequently, on a reassessment of the traditional ones. Gustavo Giovannoni provided a significant contribution to the issue of post-earthquake reconstruction, both from the theoretical point of view, through the publication of pamphlets and articles in specialized journals, and his professional activity, through the drafting of several projects for buildings in the Marsica area. This paper aims to analyse the role played by Giovannoni within the debate on anti-seismic constructions, placing it within the contemporary national and international scene, through the study of archival sources, his articles and his projects.
