The Jesuit moral theology of the early modern age is dominated by the epistemological paradigm of probabilism. Starting from the demands posed by the pastoral principle of accommodatio, probabilism serves as a proliferation device for a vast literature of cases of conscience that widen the object of moral theology, following the paths of the early modern age. From the confrontation with the structural vectors of it – reason of state, reason of market, new science – and their difficult compossibility and with the demands posed by the planetary expansion of the order, an anthropology of probable takes shape. Between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries, this human scientia media leads the transition from the tutiorist regime of norm and exception to a theology of the government that finds the elective places of its inexhaustible negotiation in the confessional, in the court and in the mission.
