«Italien ist vor uns versunken», Hugo Schuchardt, luglio 1915

Hugo Schuchardt is over than seventy years old when Italy declares war on Austria on May 23rd 1915. Italy's entry into the war puts the world of scholar and man in crisis, after he has woven a series of close relationships with colleagues across the Alps for more than half a century. Schuchardt expresses his upset in a small book, Aus dem Herzen eines Romanisten, which is both a contribution to his nation’s war effort, and the painful balance of his intellectual life.

Hugo Schuchardt ha più di settant’anni al momento in cui l’Italia dichiara guerra all’Austria, il 23 maggio 1915. L’ingresso in guerra dell’Italia mette in crisi il mondo di studioso e di uomo, che ha intessuto nel corso di più di mezzo secolo una serie di fittissime relazioni con colleghi al di là delle Alpi. Schuchardt esprime il suo turbamento in un libretto, Aus dem Herzen eines Romanisten, che è insieme un contributo allo sforzo bellico della sua nazione di elezione e il dolente bilancio di una vita “romanzo-centrica”.
