Abstract
The recommendation of Vitruvius for port construction si nullum flumen in his locis inpedierit had no application. Several ports were also settled at the mouths of rivers, since the chances of connection exceeded the inconvenience. The Claudian harbour at Ostia was thus established three kilometers from the mouth of the Tiber to use available areas, not to prevent the river silting up, from which he was removed only apparently: the fossae connecting waterway reported at least share of the Tiber to the sides the port. For carry out it, Claudio drawn Caesar’s project, using the old technique of excavation linked to the now proven Vitruvian techniques for construction of artificial harbors, based on the pozzolanic concrete. We try to understand construction processes, by comparing Dio’s description with some building details of the right pier.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
